Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme seeks to make a more formal connection between the local atomic-scale morphology of metal surfaces in the presence of adsorbates with the active sites which be measured by techniques applied to practical heterogeneous catalysts. Using STM it is proposed to study the atomic scale restructuring of model vicinal metal surfaces, especially Cu and Ni, in the presence of atomic adsorbates (principally C, N, O and S) of especial interest as possible surface species in surface reactions. The same surfaces will then be studied using FT-RAIRS and TPD to characterise their response to CO adsorption, a method used in more complex systems to titrate different kinds of adsorption, a method used in more complex systems to titrate different kinds of absorption sites. The proposal builds on existing collaboration and the complementary expertise of the two groups, surface structure determination and STM (Warwick) and Vibrational spectroscopy and catalyst characterisation (Reading). Novel aspects to be explored to extend the proposed programme include studies of curved surfaces by STM, the formation of surface alloys by metal-on-metal deposition, and oxidation of such systems to investigate metal-oxide interaction effects in surface micromorphology.
