Summary on Grant Application Form
Copolymerisation will be used to produce two types of hydrophobically-modified and functionalised water-soluble polymer. One class of copolymer, based on methacrylic acid, will respond to changes in pH. The other copolymer series will be thermoresponsive. In each case the response to the appropriate external stimulus will be characterised by a marked change in conformation. This, in turn, will result in a dramatic change in the polymer's capacity for solubilisation of organic guests. The polymers will be designed to channel energy to the occluded guest molecules an, in the case of functionalised hosts, to pump triplet states. I this way, the polymers will promote enhanced photochemistry in sequestered guests. The response of the copolymer to either pH or temperature will make the process of collection of products from the photoreaction, simple. It is anticipated that the functionalised copolymeric hosts will promote room temperature stabilised phosphorescence in appropriate guests. Consequently, those photoreactive systems would also function as a new type of recyclable reagent.
