Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will study the general formulation of measurements in quantum theory using positive operator valued measures (POMs). We will apply this formalism to analyse optical measurements being developed in our laboratory. We will investigate the general questions of how to determine in which of two or more known states a given system is prepared and the conditions under which a measurement may be performed reversibly. These results will be applied to quantum cryptography and to quantum computing. We hope to implement at least some of these ideas in collaboration with experimental colleagues in Innsbruck, Munich and here at Strathclyde.
