Summary on Grant Application Form |
A number of potential end users of the carbon produced from pyrolysis of tyres will be inteviewed to discover what specification the carbon must achieve in order to have a significant industrial value. Test facilities for the key parameters will be established using, for the most part, existing criteria to establish the current state of the art and the way foward in beneficiation . Having determined the industrial need, the fundamental phase of the work will concentrate on improvements to the carbon quality by modifications to the operating conditions during pyrolysis and post pyrolysis treatment processes. The former will examine key variables such as maximum temperature, time and rate of initial temperature rise as well the effects of the size, shape and age of the tyres. A batch pyrolysis rig will be constructed for this purpose. Carbon produced under known conditions will be examined by electron microscopy and characterised against the criteria developed in the first phase of the work.Post pyrolysis treatment processes will concentrate upon the removal of contaminants from the carbon as well as property modification to allow conformity with the required quality criteria.
