Summary on Grant Application Form
This collaborative research project aims to improve out understanding of the dynamics of symmetric Hamiltonian systems near relative equilibria, i.e. steady rotations during which the shape of the body is unchanged. The objectives include extending Patricks analysis of drift near regular relative equilibria to non-regular cases and developing a theory to describe and calculate the results of nonlinear coupling between drift and vibrational shape oscillations. The structure of the space of all relative equilibria, and the effects on relative equilibria of applying symmetry breaking perturbations will also be investigated. The results will be applied to a number of specific systems, including coupled rigid bodies, affine rigid bodies and the classical dynamics of molecules.
