This project aims to incorporate semiconductor nanocrystals in electronic devices, and to use these devices to study the transport of charge in nanocrystalline systems. Two approaches will be used to achieve electrical access to the nanocrystals: (i) formation of thin solid films of nanocrystals from solution, and (ii) formation of composite materials by blending nanocrystals with semiconducting polymers. The solid films will be characterised predominately using field effect and effect and conductivity measurements in metal-insulator- semiconductor transistors. Photovoltaic devices will be fabricated using the polymer/nanocrystal blends, where the nanocrystal components acts as the electron acceptor and allows electron transport. Photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence quenching measurements will be used to study the nature of the charge transfer at the nanocrystal/polymer interface. The information gained from these measurements, combined with the understanding of the electron transport processes between nanocrystals gained from the transistor measurements, will be used to optimise the performance of the photovoltaic devices. The effect of the nanocrystal surface structure on the electrical properties will be a key theme throughout the project.
