Summary on Grant Application Form
New non-aqueous reaction conditions has been shown to be highly advantageous for the polyleucine-catalysed asymmetric epoxidation of some simple a, b -unsaturated ketones. This proposal aims to capitalise on this discovery so as to ascertain the full range of substrates that will undergo asymmetric oxidation. Other enones (e.g. cyclic systems) and unsaturated keto esters will be used as substrates. Unsaturated esters, nitroalkenes, vinylcyanides and vinylsulfones will also be investigated. The oxidation will be extended to ketones (baeyer-Villiger oxidations) and a sulfide. Purchase of oligomers of polyeucine will allow the optimum chain-length of the catalyst to be ascertained and will prompt initial studies into the mechanism of this intriguing oxidation reaction.
