In response to a request from industry this project aims to compile, and analyse the practical utility of, a database of hydrodynamic forces acting on ROVs, particularly during deployment, in the wave affected zone. This will be achieved through the co-operation of IMCA (the International Marine Contractors Association) and participating operators who have agreed to instrument ROVs during full-scale operations. In parallel, some scale-model testing will be undertaken in the laboratory.This data will then be used by us to evaluate the applicability, or otherwise, of calculation methods used to predict these wave loads, including the form of Morisons equation as advocated in DNV guidelines. Greater accuracy and understanding of the behaviour of the forces acting on the ROVs should therefore allow operators to maximise the operational window safely and confidently, and so also increase the overall cost efficiency of many deepwater ventures which are viewed as marginal developments.
