This work will investigate the clean synthesis of formic acid from gaseous CO2 and H2 feedstreams using a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) bonded to gas diffusion electrodes. Initial empahsis at fundamental small cell level will be on the kinetics and product yields of the process and different combinations of membranes and catalyst loaded carbon substrates will be widely investigated. Both diffusional (mass transfer) and electron transfer behaviour at both elecrodes will be studied. A larger flow cell will be constructed and tested with a view to providing operational information and scale-up data. This part of the work will investigate aspects such as reaction distribution, fluid dynamic/mass transfer behaviour, water balance (crucial to membrane integrity), response to pressure, temperature, gas composition changes etc. Product yield, current yield and total voltage requirement at varying current density as well as long-term operational stability of the reactor will be viewed as key outcomes.
