Summary on Grant Application Form |
Fundings is requested for travel, subsistence and consumables costs to enable use of beamline U3C at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA. The work will exploit the technique of polarised ultra-soft near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy for molecular interracial structures. For this we plan to use a new environmental chamber which enables the collection of spectra in the spectra range (ca 150-1000eV) for the pressure range 1-10-10 mBar. The facility will be used to analyse systems of industrial importance including wax crystallisation inhibition on oil pipeline surfaces and the chain orientation of condense alkyl soaps. The research is likely to have a significant impact on the materials technology, food processing, personal products, speciality chemicals, petroleum engineering and pharmaceutical industries and can be expected to have a direct spin-off into the UK industrial sectors.
