River channel hydraulics, both in terms of flume and field research, has emphasised the development of empirical relationships between surface roughness and grainsize. The aim of this proposal is to develop a more rapid method for the accurate quantification of surface topography, for the special case of gravel-beds, where surface topography may not be a simple reflection of grain size. Existing models used to quantify surface topography are slow and time consuming, and hence costly and limited in the spatial coverage that they can achieve. This proposal would use images obtained with digital cameras of both exposed and submerged gravels in the EPSRC tilting flume, Hydraulic Research, Wallingford (HRW). Stereo-matching methods would be used to extract dense digital elevation models (DEMs) of the bed. These would be compared with benchmark data obtained using the HRW laser profiler, and the effects of DEM extraction parameters upon both DEM quality and key parameters extracted from DEMs would be investigated. Once confidence was established in DEM quality, consecutive images would be used to determine roughness parameters and quantify patterns of erosion and deposition, allowing information to be acquired at a higher frequency and with a significantly greater coverage.
