Summary on Grant Application Form
Conventional means of controlling molecular mass to very low levels include the use of a very high initiator / monomer ratio, polymerisation at high temperature and the addition of stochiometric thiol chain transfer agents; all with notable disadvantages, colour, odour, etc. The use of CCTP to control the molecular mass of methacrylic polymers by the addition of catalytic quantities of low spin cobalt (II) macrocyclic complexes to free radical polymerisations has emerged, mainly in industrial laboratories, over the last decadel. This project will to extend the scope of this catalysis to a wider monomer set. Notably, acrylates, styrenes and dienes containing a range of useful functionality. The focus of the work will be understanding the fundamental chemistry and using this in conjunction with modelling studies to design and test the most effective catalysts for generic usage.
