This proposal outlines a unique multi-disciplinary collaboration bringing together the skills and resource base of polymer chemists, cell biologists and microfabrication experts at the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow with the objective of designing and constructing biomedical implants for enhancing tissue regeneration. An already extensive knowledge of cell adhesion and the response of cells to micro and nano structures will be translated into practical devices.Specifically the proposed research seeks to optimise the production of biodegradable and biocompatible embossed films on structured fibre devices based predominantly on polyhydroxybutyrate and other aliphatic polyesters. Factors such as the infulence of plasticisers, fillers and conditions such as temperature on processing will be determined. Devices will be characterised chemically, physcially and biologically to ensure the optimisation of mechanical properties, lifetime upon implantation and cell response. Subject to sucessful trial in vitro, devices will be offered to partners in other programmes for trials in vivo.
