In 1985, it was demonstrated for the first time the existence of a novel expanded austenite phase during a physical metallurgy study of d.c. conventional glow discharge nitrided austenitic stainless steel. This phase, which was difficult to reproduce on a regular basis, contained no chromium nitride precipitates and appeared to have good corrosion resistance and a hardness of about 700Hv. The present study will fully characterise: the thermodynamics and kinetics of the formation of the interstitial expanded austenite phase over the temperature range 350-520C: the tribological and load bearing capacity of 316 and 318 stainless steels after treatment; the corrosion behaviour of the expanded austenitic phase relative to untreated material.In addition, the process will be scaled up using industrial equipment using a variety of engineering components.
