A preliminary screening of certain prochiral substituted alkenes has shown that they can be hydrogenated under heterogeneous conditions, employing a cinchona-modified Pt catalyst, in exceptionally high enantiomeric stress. It is planned to investiagte the generality of this process with a range of other prochiral alkenes, all of whose hydrogenation products are pharmaceutically valuable, especially in chiral non-racemic form. Initial indications promise considerable generality. It is then planned to investigate the mechanism of this process, to allow substrate predictiability. Finally it is planned to address the practicalities of scale-up. The aim of all of these objectives is to provide lower manufacturing costs and cleaner synthetic processes in the production of industrual chemicals, in response to the recent EPSRC call for proposals on this theme.
