Summary on Grant Application Form
Convoy driving using specially-designated highway lanes is currently under active consideration as a means of improving the traffic flow and density through the use of advanced sensing techniques and vehicle-vehicle communications. Convoys of electronically linked road usage and travelling with reduced headways are expected to significantly improve road usage and reduce fuel consumption, journey time and driver stress. Convoy driving systems are the logical extension of the intelligent cruise control (ICC) systems now being deployed. For convoy driving to be fail-safe each vehicle will have to communicate its intentions (such as speed changes, lane changes etc.) to its neighbors before any action is taken. The introduction of systems such as ICC brings the advent of convoy driving much closer. The safety of this procedure in the event of full or partial systems or mechanical failure on one of the convoy vehicles has not been examined in depth, and is the subject of the proposed research.
