Summary on Grant Application Form |
The penetration of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in fractured rock aquifers provides a fundamental research problem. Even in rocks with relatively large inter-granular porosities such as Triassic sandstone (the focus of this project) fractures may provide preferential flow paths for DNAPLS. As a consequence small amounts of DNAPL may flow far and deep into these aquifers. This proposal aims to advance our understanding of DNAPL behaviour in fractured Triassic sandstone aquifers by (a) characterising fracture aperture size distribution and fracture network connectivity in Triassic sandstone aquifers using a combination of field data and modelling and (b) measuring physio chemical parameters of DNAPL mixtures and their interaction with sandstone with an emphasis on actual DNAPLs from the field and their aging. The retension of DNAPLs in the fracture network and its transfer to the inter-granular matrix will provide an additional focus for this work. Analysis of the data obtained will permit evaluations of the fate of DNAPLs in fractured Triassic sandstone.
