Electrocatalysts based upon precious metal phthalocyanine (PMPc) are active for oxygen reduction in both acidic and basic solutions although have been little-studied compared to other metal pthalocyanines (e.g. CoPc, FePc). After suitable treatment, activity of the PMPcs in both acid and base improve drastically - in acidic solutions it exceeds even after that of platinum-alloy electrocatalysts. These treatments, different to the heat-treatments commonly employed with CoPc and FePc, are unwieldy and unsuitable for large scale eletrocatalyst production; they are labour intensive; and the modifications induced into the catalyst are, as yet, unknown.The purpose of this program is to determine the nature of the active site generated by this treatment and develop alternative ways of synthesising this site.The program will proceed along two fronts, one involving the preparation of trial compounds, and the other involved with the determination of structure and activity of both the trial compounds and the active material through both experimental and theoretical studies. Feedback from this second activity will help refine the synthetic targets, the result of which then will be re-evaluated.
