|
We propose to develop a new model for speech recognition based on phonetic features of syllables. The model first transforms the speech signal into a parallel set of overlapping-in-time streams representing acoustic correlates of features such as nasality or voicing, and then per forms a combined segmentation/recognition into syllables labelled with features such as voiced onset and unvoiced coda. The entries in the systems lexicon are spelled in terms of such syllables, rather than with traditional phonetic transcriptions. Our model permits us to avoid the fiction of phonetic segmentation and to cope with pronunciation variants.
