The project comprises an investigation into the synthesis of nanoparticles of complex ternary and quaternary oxides using a colloidal gel route, and their subsequent structural characterisation using high resolution electron microscopy. Given the high ratio of surface atoms, to bulk, investigations will concentrate on systems where surface considerations necessitate alterations in the internal structure of the particles, and an attempt will also be made to produce new structures not hitherto found in bulk materials. The physical and chemical properties of any new phases will also be studied.
