Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to synthesise new carbon alloys, containing B and Si, possessing in-situ oxidation resistance by forming glassy coatings when oxidised. Softening ranges of the coating will be fixed by the B/Si ratio. Si and B-containing moieties will be grafted onto the polyaromatic molecules from pitch and the products processed into carbon alloys by conventional methods. If spinnable fractions can be separated, alloy fibres will be produced. The structure and composition of alloys will be characterised by XPS, PEELS, XRD and TEM. Oxidation resistance and the composition of glassy products will be assessed. A preliminary study of other physical properties will be made.
