Radiolabelled (14C) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and other spikes will be added to diesel fuel and combusted in a Perkins Prima DI engine at different steady state speeds and loads. Emissions will be collected in the Total Exhaust Solvent Stripping Apparatus (TESSA) and the survival of the spiked PAH determined by radiochemcial methods. We have demonstrated a correlation between the survival of the spiked PAH and the energy of the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO). We will extend the range of PAH's beyond those already studied, and will also test the model for different speeds and loads.In addition to survival, measurement of the specific activity of the recovered PAH will reveal the proportion of that PAH emanating from combustion of other fuel components (pyrosynthesis). We intend to distinguish intermolecular pyrosynthesis and intramolecular pyrosynthesis by two main strategies: (i) a careful selection of alkylated PAH spikes, and (ii) repeated experiments with the same PAH spike but varying the fuel matrix. The Shell oil company is committed to the provision of fuel blends with a varying aromatic hydrocarbon matrix. Our overall aim is to provide an inventory of emission sources of important PAH's in terms of survival and pyrosynthesis under specified combustion conditions.
