Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new class of optical parametric oscillator (OPO) will be developed for the generation of picosecond pulses in a region of the infrared which has been previously inaccessible to conventional mode-locked lasers. The programme will exploit novel non-linear optical materials together with newly emerging all0solid0state pump laser technologies to provide a compact, efficiency and table-top source of high repetition rate picosecond pulses in the 3-5 micron spectral range. A number of new time resolved studies of narrow band gap and MQW semiconductors will be initiated in the 3-5 micron range using this unique picosecond source and involving several collaborations with other groups in the UK. These include characterisation of the transient non-linear optical responses, recombination mechanisms and intersub-band dynamics on time scales inaccessible to conventional electronics and crucial to the understanding of new IR original work by the investigators on the development of solid state, ultra short pulse mode-locked lasers, many types of optical parametric oscillators, studies of optical nonlinearities in narrow band gap semiconductors and time resolved investigations of carrier dynamics in MQW semiconductors.
