Summary on Grant Application Form
Granular materials display a wide range of interesting physical phenomena which are not well understood and which adversely affect their their processing and handling in a number of industries. A systematic investigation is proposed into the dynamics of 2-D and 3-D mdels powders to relate the microscpoic (particle level) interactions to the macroscopic (collective system) behaviour. Complementary experimental techniques that will be used inlcude high speed digital photography with automated image processing (to provide wholefield position and velocity data on 2-D systems), positron emission particle tracking (pointwise data on 3-D systems) and interferometry (normal and tangential contact forces). These techniques will be used to investigate: (i) fluidisation under vertical vibration, including transport of momentum and energy from the base through the fluidised powder and scaling laws relating granular temperature to excitation level;(ii) microscopic mechanisms for size segregation during vertical vibration over a range of excitation levels with particular emphasis on fully-disordered materials;(iii) wall stresses during the flow of granular materials in hoppers and the related problems of blockage due to arch formation.
