Summary on Grant Application Form
Knowledge of the acoustical properties of porous materials is important in controlling both the internal and external acoustical environment. Despite the increasing number of artificial porous materials based on grains or fibres, the conventional models assume a pore-based microstructure and lead either to parameters that are not available for characterising materials on a routine basis or to the need for unphysical values for some of the parameters to make the theory fit measurements. It is proposed to investigate the applicability of the coupled phase approach used previously to describe sound propagation in concentrated suspensions and emulsions. This approach has the advantage, being an external flow approach, of relying on descriptions of the size and properties of the constituent particles rather than hypothetical pores. The resulting predictions will be compared with measurements and with predictions of the most recent pore-based models. The proposed research will build on the doctoral work of the named candidate, J.M.Evans whose theory will be extended to include thermal interaction effects.
