Summary on Grant Application Form
The project combines fundametal studies of the CdTe-CdS system (Crabfield) with the investigation of electrodeposition routes to thin film PV cells (Bath) and the characterisation of materials an cells produced in this way (Bath/Cranfield). The first phase of the project has been running since Oct 1996, and the collaboration between Bath and Cranfield is firmly established. We expect to use the extension of the project into the second year to obtain a wealth of information on the tructure and properties of films prepared by electrodeposition. At the same time we shall be able to establish the CdTe-CdS phase diagram and characterise the diffusion of important components in the system. The investigation of electrodeposition will address the effect of enhanced mass transfer, solution composition and substrate pretreatrment/modification. Small test cells will be fabricated and tested, and novel (eg CdS free CdTe cells) will be developed, The effects if annealing ad type spectroscopic and strcutral methods available in Bath and Cranfield.
