Summary on Grant Application Form
An existing circulating fluidized bed (CFB) would be modified to study the residence time distribution of particles (RTD). Theory would be developed, based on the core-annulus model, to predict particle RTD. Important objectvies of the theory would be (i) to explain published data which show two peaks on the RTD-time curve (ii) to predict axial diffusivity, for comparison with publushed data, (iii) to predict the behaviour of large units; present work that the core-annulus model explains results from a unit of 5m x 5m cross-section. Experiments are planned for a CFB with (i) round section, (ii) square section, (iii) diffuser section, i.e. gradual enlargement (iv) a variety of solids reflux ratios by using different exit bends at the top of the riser.
