|
The proposed research is to experimentally and theoretically investigate the fundamentals of the fibre dynamics in the carding process and in a novel opening roller drafting process based on the carding principle, and thereby ascertain the feasibility of both processes to provide a new, more flexible production route for the manufacture of woolen yarns. The idea, however, presents several technological problems linked with disentanglement and control of fibres during processing and the aerodynamics of the card. The work will involve high-speed photographic analysis of the fibre motion, LDA for airflow visualization, and mathematical modelling of the process. The carding quality will be assessed by measuring nep content and fibre breakage. Yarn quality will be evaluated in terms of established woollen yarn characteristics.
