Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the continuation of a major II-VI semiconductor programme at Heriot-Watt Physics Department. These materials provide fascinating research opportunities not only because of existing and potential device applications but because the high ionicity results in enhanced exciton effects compared to, e,g, GaAs-based materials. Thus, this proposal addresses the physics and materials science needed to develop and understand blue laser diodes which will provide a workbench for investigations of growth studies, doping methods and fabrication techniques as well as non-linear optical studies of gain involving excitations and a fundamental study of the equilibrium and dynamic nature of the electron-hole plasma in the presence of strong Coulombic effects. Growth studies will include the synchrotron radiation topography of ZnCdSe on GaAs in order to determine the critical thickness of quantum well layers in diode lasers and the study of (III) layers where hexagonal and mixed hexagonal/cubic structures will be fabricated by MBE for the first time.
