Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme will formulate a better understanding of the functioning of ventilated windows, a heat reclaim component for the delivery into houses of preheated ventilation air in winter. Our intention is to use test cell methods to determine a range of temperatures at which the windows can be operable, i.e. at which the air within the window is heated sufficiently to overcome the loss of insulation caused by the air flow through it and at which the possibility of condensation forming is overcome. The parameters established from test cell experiments will be used to construct a computational fluid dynamics model of the window in order to determine a range of dimensions for the window that will enable the most efficient heat exchange. The programme will derive design tools for the most beneficial integration of the windows with the building fabric, and alternative specifications for the glass used. The use of the system in actual house conditions will be assessed using the energy modelling programme ESP-r or APACHE to define their operating characteristics in terms of cost and payback periods.
