Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project takes advantage of a little-known property of fibre that has been narrowed by being stretched while heated (tapered fibre): it can be bent to sub-millimetre radii without causing loss. In contrast, untreated fibre suffers bend loss for radii of about 1cm or less. We propose to make a series of passive and active all-fibre devices on a miniature scale by using tapered fibre as the raw material. The required optical path will be laid out using lengths of tapered fibre. Elementary components will be made at appropriate places: directional couplers will be made at crossing points by fusion using a carbon dioxide laser, and gratings will be written by exposure to UV light where required. We propose to build a number of simple yet important miniature compound devices, and so demonstrate the range of more complicated devices that could be built. We expect the small size and low loss of these all-fibre devices to find widespread applications within telecommunications.
