Summary on Grant Application Form |
In order to explain transition phenomena in (nearly) parallel flows, we have recently proposed two new mechanisms, (i) phase-locked interaction and (ii) resonant triad of mixed modes, as alternatives to the well-known subharmonic resonance. Both mechanisms induce super-exponential growth of certain oblique modes, and thus play an important role in the early stages of transition to turbulence. The purpose of this project is (a) to continue our study of these mechanisms in a plane wake and to make a quantitative comparison with the latest experiments, (b) to extend our study of supersonic flows, aiming at clarifying the most likely transition scenarios, and (c) to explore the possible connection between the phase-locked interaction and Herberts secondary instability theory.
