Summary on Grant Application Form
Submonolayer film growth is an area of current technological and scientific interest, with a wide range of applications being proposed for supported nanoculsters and thin films, The applicant's previous work on island growth during thin film deposition has focused on simplified computer simulation of the process. Theoretical modelling in association with this work has led to the development of the Capture Zone scheme, which provides a suitable framework for understanding the growth and its scaling properties. The purpose of this proposal is to develop the existing computational and theoretical models to include generic thermal effects, in order to make the work of direct relevance to various experimental situations. The processes to be addressed are adatom evaporation, island mobility and island morphology, which are recognised as significant factors in the production of supported nanoscale clusters and complete thin films. The simulations and theoretical models to be utilised are general in nature and widely applicable to realistic systems. Therefore the work will be continually compared to experimental situations and effects of particular interest will be targeted by appropriately tuning the relevant model parameters. Since temperature is one of the few variables under experimental control this modelling will enhance both the understanding and the potential control of experimental growth processes.
