Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will be concerned with developing and validating models to describe the metallurgical phenomena which occur when a range of structural casting superalloys are welded. Such models should be considered as an essential link for relating superalloy composition to a probability associated with successful manufacture of the welded assemblies. For the purposes of model validation, welding apparatus at Rolls-Royce's manufacturing facilities will be available, as will a Gleeble thermal-mechanical welding simulator and a Nd:YAG laser at the University of Cambridge. The application of these models would allow decisions to be made concerning the viability of joining new grades of superalloy with each of the available welding processes, in a more rational manner than is possible at present.
