Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research would bring together a major supplier and major user with two academic centres which possess unique expertise in characterisation techniques, to improve the understanding and performance of as-used set-modifiers in cement/concrete. For this the changing hydration chemistry and performance of cement/set-modifiers needs to be studied in detail, and in new more-revealing ways, by using a combination of conventional and novel in situ characterisation techniques over a wide range of mixing/curling conditions. Such conditions should mimic and extend beyond current industrial practice. The proposed research would involve varying a number of listed cement/set-modifiers combinations with a range of mixing parameters (temperature, pressure, shear rate/history) within and beyond typical schedules adopted by the construction and oil-exploration industries. The subsequent hydration chemistry and long-term performance would then be studied using unique synchrotron/neutron diffraction techniques and measurements of sorptivity and fluid/ion transport properties. The outcomes might then be translated into site practice by the industrial partners.
