Following our recently patented synthesis of the first class of chiral phosphenium salts (CPSs), the phosphorus analogues of singlet carbenes, we seek here to develop the chemistry of such species in two principal phases. Phase one involves an examination of (1) the synthetic scope and (2|) important aspects of the chemical and physical properties of CPSs whilst Phase two is a detailed investigation of how CPSs can be exploited in three strategic areas: (1) Synthesis. Asymmetric synthesis of chiral organophosphorus compounds through CPS reagents. For example, exploitation of the asymmetric phospho-Diels Alder reaction and the activation of [C-H] bonds via CPSs.(2) Analysis. The development of novel chiral derivatising agents based on CPSs for assaying enantiopurity of both electrophilic and nucleophilic compounds. (3) Catalysis. An exploration of enantioselective processes employing CPSs as innovative chiral Lewis acids, the first such examples based on a metal-free phosphorus compound. Processes include the BH3-mediated reduction of [C=X] functions (X = O, NR), aziridination and cyclopropanation3 of prochiral alkenes and addition of allyl stannes or silanes to carbonyls.
