Summary on Grant Application Form |
The quantum cascade laser is a new far-infra-red semiconductor laser based on electronic transistors between energy levels created by quantum confinement. The production of such an inversion is a delicate balance amongst the electron and phonon energy distributions and scattering rates. The most important of these are electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering and quantitative description is required to understand and optimise the behaviour of these new devices. Such a description is properly based on their microscopic, many-body interactions and our objective is to use many-body techniques to provide a complete model of electronic scattering processes in semiconductor quantum wells which determine the carrier distribution functions and hence the optical properties.
