Our understanding of the complex pathways resulting in the formation of NOx in combustion systems is crucial if emissions are to be effectively kept below the limits set by current and future legislation. A relevant area , which has largely been ignored in the past, is the role of S-N interactions within the chemistry of NOx formation in flames. We have already shown that sulphur can significantly effect NOx formation in turbulent diffusion liquid fuel flames. Considerable efforts are also being made at the present time to try to model the complex behaviour of coal particles in flames so as to accurately predict NOx formation and develop mechanisms. However, no attention has been given to quantifying the importance of S/N interactions in coal flames in comparison to the efforts directed at understanding the other complex homogeneous and heterogeneous NOx formation and reduction mechanisms. This proposal sets out as a novel experimental approach designed to quantify the importance of sulphur species on greatest effect and, by means of selective extraction techniques, also establish the significance, if any, of the different forms of sulphur found in coal.
