Summary on Grant Application Form |
I plan to investigate the effects of vorticity in superfluid helium -3 B at temperatures of ~ 100 microkelvin. Two experiments are planned which can be carried out in the same experimental cell. The first of these is to study unusual step-like structures in the force-velocity characteristics of vibrating wire viscometers at the pair breaking edge. The second experiment is an investigation of the decay of vorticity following neutron irradiation of a superfluid helium-3 particle detector. Both experiments require similar low temperature conditions and can be carried out using ultra-fine vibrating wire resonators, which I have developed in the last few months.
