Summary on Grant Application Form
Electrodeposition is now accepted as a useful alternative to vacuum methods for growing films with giant magnetoresistance (GMR). Co-Ni-Cu/Cu multilayers are of particular interest, because some previous work (carried out in Bristol University) has shown that they can exhibit very different magnetotransport behaviours, depending on the electrodeposition conditions. We propose to make a systematic study of the Co-Ni-Cu/Cu system using a specially constructed flow cell incorporating an electrochemical quartz crystal nano-balance and a pH-microprobe. Multilayers will be electrodeposited from well-established sulfamate and a lesser-explored but non-toxic and non-corrosive citrate-based electrolyte. The reasons for previously observed differences between multi-layers electrodeposited under potentiostatic and galvanostatic will also be investigated.
