Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electrodeposition is now accepted as a useful alternative to vacuum methods for growing films with giant magnetoresistance (GMR).Co-Ni-Cu/Cu multilayers are of particular interest, because our previous work has shown that they can exhibit very different magnetotransport behaviours, depending on the electrodeposition conditions. We shall make a systematic study of the Co-Ni-Cu/Cu system using a specially constructed flow cell incorporating an electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance and a pH micro-probe. Multilayers will be electrodeposited both from the well-established sulphamate-based electrolytes and from non-toxic, non-corrosive citrate- based electrolytes. The reasons for previously observed differences between multilayers electrodeposited under potentiostatic (constant potential) and galvanostatic (constant current) control will also be investigated.
