Summary on Grant Application Form |
Suction caissons are a recently introduced alternative to the piled foundations used for fixed offshore structures, but their behaviour under typical offshore loading conditions is not well understood. A series of carefully controlled model tests will be carried out in which a variety of load combinations will be applied to a model footing on dense sand. Time effects will be scaled by appropriate choice of loading rate and materials. Cyclic loading will be applied using a pseudo-random time history, in which extreme events will be reproduced using the New Wave concept. The results will be interpreted in terms of theories which can be implemented directly in a structural analysis.
