Summary on Grant Application Form |
The drive within the aerospace industry for improved performance and higher reliability has highlighted photonics as potentially a major asset in a wide range of future avionics systems. In trying to meet the future needs of on-board networking, it is envisaged that electrical communications will suffer from problems of bandwidth and reconfigurability, becoming one of the primary drivers for fibre optic implementations in addition to weight and freedom from electromagnetic interference. The full potential of photonics in aerospace data transmission has not been investigated and scope exists for significant innovation and development. It is the aim of this project to investigate the long term applications offered by optical networking with a view to providing end-to-end photonic network concepts and components to meet the unique requirements of aerospace. Three areas of activity can be identified corresponding to network studies, device studies and culminating in the assembly in simple demonstrations of device and subsystem functionality under aerospace operating conditions. The studies will be undertaken by two established university research groups with complimentary expertise, support by key industrial companies from the aerospace sector.
