Summary on Grant Application Form |
Fully premixing gas burners offer considerable advantages over conventional partially premixing gas burners in domestic and small commercial heating applications in terms of flexibility, thermal efficiency and emissions. Their use is being inhibited, however, by their propensity to excite unacceptable acoustic resonances when incorporated within sealed combustion systems. This research, to be carried out in collaboration with a leading burner manufacturer, will study the responses of the flames formed by different designs of fully premixing burner to simulated acoustic feedback of various frequencies and amplitudes, the oscillatory movements of the flame front being visualised by planar laser-induced fluorescence. The aim is to identify the relevant acoustic/flame or acoustic/flow/flame interaction mechanisms, provide data for the modelling of these processes and provide guidance to the burner manufacturer as to the particular design features most likey to cause resonance problems in practial installations.
