Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research will involve numerical modelling of a stagnation point flow configuration, with the object of studying the combined effects of stretch and radiative heat loss on the extinction of laminar premised flames with unburnt composition near the flammability limits. In most cases a stream of unburnt gas with defined thermodynamic properties will be opposed by its own equilibrium combustion productions issuing from a concentric opposed nozzle maintained also at the unburnt temperature Tu. Curves of extinction limit composition verses stretch rate will be obtained for both lean and rich hydrogen-air and methane-air mixtures. At zero stretch rate, the composition extinction limit with radiative loss alone will be computed by means of a standard one-dimensional flame code. Additionally, in all cases temperature and species profiles in the flame will be obtained, together with the space integrals of the rate of consumption of fuel and oxidizer.
