Summary on Grant Application Form |
The design of compact bends and corners as part of PICs with acceptable overall loss is essential to improve PIC functionality for more reliable but complex optical systems at reduced cost for high-density and high-speed, having low-loss and also being polarisation independent. This will include the minimisation of radiation loss by using low substrate index and multi-mode waveguide sections, the offset and width adjustment to minimise the butt-coupling loss , the use of cornered sections to reduce overall loss and tapered sections to eliminate higher order modes to reduce modal dispersion. Further, waveguide design optimisation will be carried out including the use of birefringent materials and non-vertical side walls will be considered to reduce the polarisation dependence. The project will also study polarisation rotations at sharp corners and the optimisation of the corners in deep-etched guides for the design of low-loss compact optical waveguide bends with low polarisation dependence. The industrially relevant programme has been designed with the support of DERA to meet advanced PIC design considerations.
