Iron and silicon-iron electrotechnical steels remain the most important magnetic material produced in the UK. Around 1 million tons of non-oriented electrical steel are produced yearly in Europe for use in a vast variety of magnetic cores used throughout the electrical engineering industry. Losses in such cores accounts for almost 5% of all energy generated. It is proposed to investigate a range of new alloys in the thickness range 0.1-0.65mm with silicon concentrations of 0-6 %. Concentration gradients will be set up in some alloys by chemical vapour diffusion in order to reduce eddy current losses. The alloys will be systematically tested and compared with existing materials under rotational and distorted flux waveforms which occur in machine cores and the combined effect of thickness, grain size, texture and composition on the performance under such practical operating conditions. Attempts will be made to specify the optimum combination of magnetic properties when magnetised under such conditions will be quantified. A new understanding of the role of eddy current and hysteresis losses under distorted and rotational flux will help steel makers identify new ranges of products which can be manufactured using existing technology to achieve better performance for a wide range of applications.
