In Ti aluminides the co-existence of Al and Nb, Mo, V tends to promote ordering of the bcc beta phase and formation of the omega phase. The latter is detrimental to the mechanical properties of the alloys. The severity of the detrimental effect of omega on the mechanical properties of Ti aluminides and the enhancement in properties that could be achieved if its formation were to be avoided have been recognised by those involved in the development / production as well as the potential use of such alloys in gas turbines and other engine applications. R&D programmes are under way or due to start in the next 18 months in USA and Germany to deepen understanding of the omega phase formation and its stability in Ti aluminides. The proposed research is a fundamental and systematic study which aims to understand how the interplay between Al and later transition metals (on the right of group IVB elements in the periodic table) affects the formation and stability of the omega phase in multi-component Ti alloys. The effects of atomic size and electron factors on omega formation in TM-Al, TiAl-TM (TM=Cr,Mn) alloys and Ti-47Al-1.5Nb-1Cr-1Mn will be studied. Predictive modelling for avoiding the omega phase in Ti.
