Summary on Grant Application Form
The demand for very high-density information storage on hard disks requires new magnetic materials in the future. High-coercivity is a prime requirement as well as small thickness of the magnetic film. In this project the feasibility of NbFeB films will be investigated for the first time as computer disk material. The project involves detailed magnetic and microstructural studies, fabrication of the most promising magnetic films on computer disks and testing. The NbFeB materials will be doped with Co and Cu to improve remanence and control grain size at lower crystallisation temperatures. The long range target is to produce very high performance magnetic storage layer for the computer disk drive industry,
