Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project concerns the development of new electroluminescent block copolymers for use in light emitting diodes consisting of alternating oligothiophene units , w-linked with methylene spacers of different chain lengths. Optimisation of the photophysical properties of these materials will be achieved by striking the right balance between the lengths of the conjugated blocks vs those of the saturated methylene spacer groups. The substitution pattern of the oligothiophene blocks will also have a major impact not only on their band gap (and hence that of the copolymers), but also on the packing or stacking of copolymer chains in the solid (films). Adequate structural design of these materials could favor formation of copolymers with self-assembly properties in which the solid state supramolecular structure and morphology (packing of oligothiophene chromophores) could lead to improved electronic transport in addition to exciton confinement on the short oligothiophene segments. All these factors will be kept in mind in the design of these new materials. Photoluminescence and electroluminescence experiments will be performed upon these materials in order to rationalise their photophysical behaviour and produce LED devices with enhanced efficiencies.
